Bank of America Investigation Details
On October 13, 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced more than $1.21 billion in penalties against Bank of America for violations of federal anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. According to regulators, Bank of America failed to properly monitor trillions of dollars in transactions and timely report more than $5 billion in suspicious activity, including over $1 billion involving potential national security risks, Chinese money laundering networks, and illicit financial activity along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) imposed a $1.2 billion penalty, while the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) assessed a $750 million penalty credited toward the FinCEN assessment. Regulators further alleged that Bank of America maintained deficient compliance controls and failed to adequately address previously identified weaknesses in its anti-money laundering program. Following the announcement, Bank of America shares reportedly declined more than 2% in after-hours trading on October 13, 2026.
